The World Premiere Of The ID. AERO

Volkswagen’s First Fully-Electric Sedan

With the world premiere of the ID. AERO, a powerful vehicle with pure aerodynamics, this concept car is being shown in China where Volkswagen is providing a teaser of the brand’s first fully-electric sedan. The future model of the ID. AERO will be placed in the premium mid-size sedan segment. The fully-electric vehicle is stylish, progressive, and aerodynamic which allows the vehicle to impress from the inside out. The production version for China of the Volkswagen ID. AERO is expected to go on sale during the second half of 2023, while Europe can also plan to see the electric sedan in 2023.

This concept car is about five meters long and was designed upon aerodynamic principles with a sloping roof angled elegantly towards the rear in a coupe style, and achieves a drag coefficient of 0.23. Volkswagen’s modular electric drive matrix or MEB gives additional short overhangs with a long wheelbase and an exceedingly spacious interior. Equipped with a powerful lithium-ion battery, the ID. AERO has a net energy content of 77 kWh, and with the interaction of the efficient drive system, the ID. AERO achieves ranges of up to 630 kilometers.

Ralf Brandstätter, Chief Executive Officer of Volkswagen Passenger Cars says, “With the ID. AERO show car, we are revealing a preview of the next member of the ID. family. A car with an emotional and at the same time extremely aerodynamic design, a range of over 600 kilometers, an extraordinary amount of space, and a premium interior. With our ACCELERATE strategy, we are intensively driving forward the electrification of our model range. Following ID.4, this model will be our next global car for Europe, China, and the US.”

Volkswagen is stepping up to its electric offensive in China with its close-to-production ID. AERO concept car, as part of its ACCELERATE strategy. The production version of the ID. AERO following the ID.3, ID.4, and ID.6 will be the fourth fully electric model series in China with the expected availability of the AERO in the second half of 2023. Volkswagen plans to become the leading supplier of sustainable vehicles in China with at least every second vehicle sold will be electric by 2030.

The ID. AERO will be offered globally in the future with Volkswagen driving forward its electric offensive worldwide on the Way to ZERO.

Volkswagens ID. AERO demonstrates the versatility and flexibility of the fully-electric MEB architecture, which can adapt to vehicles of different sizes and shapes. From compact crossovers to SUVs to spacious sedans, the MEB can be used across the segments. The MEB allows the ID. family to enter the mid-size sedan segment as well.  This also allows for the possibility of electric mobility on long ranges, a maximum of digital connectivity along with over-the-air update compatibility.

It is expected that the production of the ID. AERO for the European version in Emden will roll off the assembly line in 2023, where Emden will be one of the first Volkswagen plants of its kind. They will have a decisive contribution to electrifying the model range and reducing CO2 emissions of the new vehicle fleet.
